PLANET IN PERIL, PART I

Tonight, this worldwide investigation, reported by CNN's Anderson Cooper and Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and Animal Planet's Jeff Corwin starts in the back alleys of Bangkok ’s colorful and chaotic “JJ Market,” a major center of the global black market animal trade. Steve Galster, co-founder of the conservation group Wildlife Alliance, that has confiscated more than 17,000 wild animals, takes the crew through training with Thai law enforcement as they protect native and endangered species from illegal traders.

Next, the documentary travels to Madagascar , home of rare amphibians caught during a Wildlife Alliance raid, to reveal from the air how the island nation has destroyed nearly 85 percent of its forests – where some of the world’s rarest species live – as many as 22 varieties discovered within the last 15 years. Elsewhere, the team reveals efforts to save other endangered species including a wounded tiger in Cambodia ’s Bokor National Park and a young elephant hobbled by a poacher’s snare. In China , the team examines how the most populous nation in the world houses 16 of the 20 most polluted cities in the world and will likely become the No.1 emitter of greenhouse gases within the next year.

In U.S. , the team discovers that of the roughly 80,000 chemicals and synthetics that exist in myriad products available in the U.S. , only 25 percent are tested for safety. Nearly every American shows signs of PCBS, mercury, lead and other contaminants within their blood streams, and children show higher concentrations than adults.

PLANET IN PERIL, PART II

In Part II, CNN's Anderson Cooper and Animal Planet's Jeff Corwin skim across the Greenland ice sheet on a snowmobile to a giant gap in the ice, where a river rushes beneath a glacier. They witness similar effects on the ice along Alaska ’s Beaufort Sea , and discover how these changes are affecting the survival of the polar bear.

From the Arctic, the team travels to the South Pacific’s Carteret Islands , which might be one of the first places on Earth to feel the full effects of rising sea levels and ocean temperatures. Meanwhile, waters recede in the central African desert where CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta visits a family of fishermen who used to live on the banks of Lake Chad but now walk miles just to get water. Examining deforestation, Cooper and Corwin travel to Brazil ’s Amazon basin where patches of rainforest the size of New Jersey are cut down annually. They confront poachers in a tense stand-off between illegal hunters and government agents.

Also in this episode, Cooper takes questions posed by skeptics of climate change and looks at whether pollution from petroleum companies in Texas is a source of pediatric leukemia.

Six years after the Sept. 11 attacks, CNN’s Anderson Cooper investigates the world’s largest producer of opium – Afghanistan. Despite the millions of American dollars spent on eradication, poppy cultivation in Afghanistan remains out of control with the heroin produced from the opium finding its way to the streets of America and Western Europe.

After a three-month investigation, CNN: Special Investigations Unit – Narco State: The Poppy Jihad uncovers how opium became 46 percent of Afghanistan’s gross domestic product, and what the United States is doing to stop the drug trade and interrupt its links to organized terrorism. Narco State premieres on Saturday, Sept. 8, and Sunday, Sept. 9, at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. All times Eastern.

The documentary reveals that Afghan farmers do not earn much for their crop, but it is more than they can earn growing anything else.

“They [poppies] bring eight times the price of wheat, even though the soaring rate of cultivation means that traffickers will pay less money for the crop this year than last,” Cooper says.

Afghanistan is one of the poorest nations on earth, providing almost no financial support for farmers. Hundreds of millions of dollars from the sale of opium help fund the Taliban and possibly al Qaeda. Afghan government and NATO forces have been reluctant to cultivate enemies among the farmers by interfering with poppy growing. As the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency destroys a poppy crop, a farmer protests: “You have destroyed my crops. I will have no harvest. How will I pay back my loan? What will I eat?”

Cooper points out how the loan likely came from drug lords who may demand one of his daughters for repayment.

International support for developing other institutions and loan programs for farmers has been nearly nonexistent despite the offer of some promises. A U.S. counter-narcotics expert confirms that farmers no longer trust the United States and other governments to help them convert to legitimate agriculture.

Narco State – The Poppy Jihad features interviews with CNN terrorism and Afghanistan expert Peter Bergen, British terrorism journalist Peter Jouvenal, U.S. and Afghan counter-narcotics agents, U.S. intelligence agency officials, and Afghan tribal leaders, drug mules and farmers. The program and Cooper traces the web of links between the drug trade and the resurgence of the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan.

“Anyone who wants to remember 9/11 should be very concerned about what’s happening in Afghanistan right now,” says Norine MacDonald, a U.S. counter-narcotics expert.

There's still a chance that Anderson Cooper will have a scent of his own. We recently revealed that Tom Ford asked Anderson to become the spokesperson for a new cologne he's creating that he wanted to name after Cooper, but Anderson turned him down. Anderson told his fashion maven mom Gloria Vanderbilt about the offer and she LIKED the idea and pushed her son to give it some more thought. That's exactly what Anderson is doing, and if Tom Ford gets his way, "Coop" could be out by the holiday season.

The research conducted by Dr. Richard Visser on childhood obesity, implemented programs such as the Sailboat Food Guide and the eXtreme H Games on Aruba and Visser’s new leadership role which is taking him on new roads with children around the world showing a light at the end of the tunnel for children and their parents.

• The Amanpour session was followed by a depressing CNN session about an upcoming series, “Planet in Peril.” But there was a moment of comic relief when anchor Anderson Cooper was asked how valuable wildlife biologist Jeff Corwin of the Discovery Channel was on the series.

“In the Amazon, we were repeatedly bitten by things, and Jeff could sort of identify them and tell us whether or not it was severe or not,” said Cooper. “One of our cameramen was actually hospitalized after being bitten by a spider. The other one had a spider lay eggs inside him. So it’s comforting when you have something growing in you to have someone like Jeff there.”

CNN and Discovery are teaming up to give the news network’s upcoming eco-focused documentary Planet in Peril play on both networks.

The show will run for four hours over two nights on CNN Oct. 23 and 24 at 9 p.m., and will replay on Discovery. The reason: the show is hosted by Jeff Corwin, a marquee talent for Discovery’s Animal Planet, in addition to CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta.

The deal for Corwin to appear in the special was arranged by the two networks months ago when Billy Campbell was still Discovery Networks President, CNN U.S. President Jon Klein told B&C in an interview. Campbell was cut during a senior executive restructure in April under new Discovery President/CEO David Zaslav. As part of the talks, Discovery agreed to the replay, he said.

It is not uncommon for one news entity to cut such a one-time deal for talent to do a project on another network. CNN’s Cooper, for example, regularly reports for CBS’s newsmagazine 60 Minutes.

Rumors continue to surface about Anderson Cooper and the CBS Nightly News, Katie Couric notwithstanding:

Will CBS ditch Couric for a more traditional anchor this fall? It could happen. Couric is planning to do more work for “60 Minutes,” which could mean she’s planning to spend less time on the “Evening News.”

If that happens, who would step into the seat once warmed by Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather?

CBS doesn’t have a Charlie Gibson waiting in the wings — a comfy, familiar presence who can slip right into the job virtually unnoticed. But it could tap Anderson Cooper, who (perhaps because of the gray hair and CNN resume) has a hard-news aura about him.

We here at unanchored don't claim to know Mr. Cooper, or be able to read his mind or anything of that nature, but just from things he has said in interviews or written, it's hard to believe he would find the job at all rewarding, except perhaps financially.

More lying with statistics - a primer

Welcome to TVNewser readers, and kudos to Brian for posting our rebuttal to the Chi-Trib nonsense; we did, after all, use his own stats to prepare it, so he no doubt felt obliged.

Here's yet another way people who want to massage the data can make figures say whatever they want; ignore trends and use inappropriate periods to compare against.

Say you have the following two shows, rated over uniform periods, in arbitrary quantities:

Show A: 100 ... 80 ... 60 ... 40
Show B: 30 ... 40 ... 50 ... 60

Which show is the better bet, ratings-wise? Proponents of Show A could easily say it was superior - after all, its average rating over the period is 70, versus a mere 45 for Show B. Never mind that Show B clearly is growing an audience and Show A is losing theirs.

Remember to look behind the figures and question the motives of people promulgating bogus factoids like the Chi-Trib canard.

Lying with statistics or the Aaron Brown Got Better Ratings meme

Aaron Brown's contract with CNN has officially expired and now he's talking. (here, here and here.) Some people - but not, to his credit, Mr. Brown himself - are using the opportunity to dust off the old "Aaron Brown got better ratings than Anderson Cooper gets now" urban legend. We were saddened to see even Rachel Sklar at Eat the Press, whom we usually adore, propagating this data atrocity (admittedly in a footnote), so we thought we would address it here.

People are getting these bogus figures by looking at the program ranker figures, which lists viewers by program, rather than the hourly figures. AC360 spans two hours, and replaced both NewsNight and a repeat of Lou Dobbs. BOTH hours outscore the shows they replaced, but because the 11PM hour is always lower, it brings down the average of the whole show, and thus makes it appear (to the stupid) that Anderson Cooper's numbers are lower than Aaron Brown's were.

Another 'how to lie with statistics' technique is to compare a datapoint to an average. Take Larry King's 'Paris' rating, for instance, and act like he gets that every night. Or the ratings from, say, right after 9/11. Yet another technique is to compare unlike months, say, November to May. People's viewing varies across the year; some months ALL ratings are lower and some months more people are home and watching. You have to compare like to like to get VALID comparisons.

Programming Changes

We all noticed that the second hour of AC360 was identical to the first hour on Monday. Tuesday, they actually got twenty minutes into the eleven o'clock hour before running with repeats. Unfortunately, it appears that the duplication is at least semi-permanent. This from Inside Cable News:

AC 360 summer programming changes…

ICN received email from alert Anderson Cooper 360 viewers inquiring about AC 360 cutting back on its live coverage to just the first hour. I looked into it and here’s the story:

AC 360 will be live from 10 pm ET to the top of the 11 pm hour. The rest of the 11 pm hour will be tape. However, if there’s a breaking news occurring the program will continue live as warranted. This format will remain in place for the rest of the summer.

We fear this may be the harbinger of other schedule changes, but hope we're wrong.

Public to Submit Video Questions for Candidates for July 23 Democratic Debate, Sept. 17 Republican Debate

CNN, the most trusted news source, and YouTube, the leading online video community that allows people to discover, watch and share originally created videos, today announced plans to bring two unprecedented presidential debates to the American public. For the first time in presidential debate history, the live forum will feature video questions submitted to YouTube which will be broadcast and answered by the candidates on CNN. CNN’s Anderson Cooper will moderate the two-hour debates and pose follow-up questions.

Anderson Cooper and Tom ford have been seen having lunch in Manhattan and they got New Yorkers buzzing overtime about WHAT they might be talking about. Actually Tom ford was offering Anderson a job as spokesman for his new cologne line coming out later this summer. Cooper was impressed with the scent and flattered to be considered for such a gig, but explained he already had plans for the summer. He's made promises to people that he'll return to Iraq, the Sudan, and Indonesia, and has no time for jobs on the side. Ford immediately sweetened the deal by offering to send Cooper's salary to charities in Africa. Cooper thought about it, but ended up saying no to Tom Ford. And THAT doesn't happen often.

For the first hour of both two-hour, commercial-free debates, candidates will address questions from CNN's Wolf Blitzer, WMUR-TV political director Scott Spradling and New Hampshire Union Leader State House bureau chief Tom Fahey. In the second hour, candidates move from behind their lecterns to the front of the stage to field queries directly from an audience of more than 100 undecided registered voters.

The debate will be broadcast live throughout New Hampshire on WMUR-TV and nationally on CNN, CNN Radio, CNN International, CNN.com, WMUR.com and UnionLeader.com. In an unprecedented move, unlimited debate coverage will be made available without restrictions at the conclusion of each live debate.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has pushed for clear limitations on hydrocarbon consumption; the new French president Sarkozy has jumped on the global warming bandwagon as well. With Blair on his way out and Abe under a cloud, these may be the closest leaders to Bush in the G8. Yes the U.S. has angrily rebuffed this initiative. This is, correctly, viewed as front-page above-the-fold news in Europe, and this Financial Times treatment is typical. But in the United States the struggle continues to identify the Paris-Hilton-story of the week.

If there’s an exception in the U.S. media these days, then it’s CNN’s Anderson Cooper. He’s been doing a series of reports from Greenland, whose topography is being dramatically transformed by the melting of the glacial ice that Viking explorers sought to obscure by giving it a false name. CNN anchor, Branson lead off Florida Forum

Anderson Cooper, Sir Richard Branson, Larry Kudlow and Tiki Barber will be the speakers for the Florida Forum's 2007-08 season. The board founded the Florida Forum as a fundraiser 16 years ago.

Cooper, CNN anchor/reporter, will kick off the series Oct. 20.

Branson, the British entrepreneur behind the Virgins - Records, Atlantic Airways and Galactic - and other worldwide ventures, follows on Nov. 13.

Economic forecaster Kudlow, host of CNBC's Kudlow & Co., will appear on Feb. 21.

Barber, former Pro Bowl running back for the New York Giants and now an NBC Today show regular, closes the series April 8.

Tickets for the entire series start at $175 per person for general seating

The Florida Forum is held at the Florida Theatre. All talks will begin at 7 p.m., and no tickets are sold in advance for individual talks.
